BENEDICTINE CONNECTIONS
“Benedict’s way is the way of Christ, who
welcomed without distinction and set
before people a vision of what they might
become.”
Elizabeth Canham

Can the “connection” between the members of a monastic community and the married and single women and men who come regularly to the monastery door be as simple as that:
To set before one another a vision of what we might become in Christ?
• What are the opportunities to become more closely associated with the community of Emmanuel
Monastery?
• Why would anyone seek such connection?
• What might the mutual grace of such connection
mean for our world today?
Live into the answers to these questions together with us. The vision of what we might become in Christ will be revealed in the mutuality of the monastic journey.

The Oblates are a “lay arm” of the Benedictine community. They share in the prayer and works of Emmanuel Monastery as committed community affiliates and as women and men committed to Gospel values. Oblates carry the Benedictine charism of prayer, service, hospitality and community into the world where they live and work. They meet monthly to pray together, reflect on and discuss monastic values, and to share their own lived experiences. Oblates find in each other and in the Benedictine Sisters companions for the journey of seeking God.

PACEM is an acronym for People Associated with the Community of Emmanuel Monastery.
It is derived from the Latin word for "peace." Benedictines throughout history have been committed to works of justice and peace, a commitment that reaches today into a culture of fear and hostility. PACEM offers one way to respond in today’s culture.
PACEM members are women and men of various backgrounds and lifestyles who have experienced a call to deepen their spirituality according to the spirit and vision of St. Benedict.
They cultivate mutually enriching relationships with the Benedictine Sisters of Emmanuel Monastery and those associated with the community. PACEM differs from the Oblate program in that it is structured more for the individual member.

In addition to the above formal programs, individuals may also associate with the community, sharing their individual gifts and talents with the community. These individuals connect with the community and its prayer and work in ways that accommodate their lives and spiritual journey. Individual association allows for “long distance” connection with the community as well.
